Understanding Schizophrenia: A Journey into the Unknown

Understanding Schizophrenia: A Journey into the Unknown, author Dr. Pulakesh Sarmah( Psychiatry in Guwahati)

Schizophrenia, though an unfamiliar term for many, is often a nightmare for those suffering from it or for the families and friends of someone affected. Anyone who has witnessed its severity will agree — it is one of the most debilitating mental health conditions that can afflict a human being. And tragically, it arises through no fault of the individual. It leads them away from their desired path, into a world of confusion and fear.

With a global prevalence of approximately 1%, it is crucial that people become more aware of schizophrenia. In simple terms, schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that takes a person away from reality. It becomes an uphill battle for them to differentiate the real from the unreal.

A typical case may involve a young male (often between 15 to 25 years) or a slightly older female (although it can start at any age). The person may begin to behave in ways quite unlike their usual self. They may withdraw from social interaction or become unreasonably angry or fearful. Sometimes, they may feel targeted — believing that a specific person, a group, or even society at large is against them. These persistent false beliefs, despite clear evidence to the contrary, are called delusions.

In some cases, the person might believe they have supernatural powers or are being controlled by machines or aliens. They may also experience hallucinations, such as hearing voices — sometimes those of God, celebrities, or unknown individuals — that may instruct, abuse, or talk about them constantly. Even in the absence of any external stimulus, these voices feel very real.

These symptoms — delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and disorganized behavior — gradually pull the person away from reality. Left untreated, schizophrenia often progresses and causes significant damage to the individual’s personal, social, and occupational life.

Why Does Schizophrenia Occur?

Schizophrenia is a brain disorder. Much like diabetes, hypertension, or Parkinson’s disease, it is a medical condition. It is not caused by evil spirits, personal sins, or solely by stress (although stress can contribute to symptom onset). It is important for society to move beyond myths and approach it with scientific understanding.

Is There a Treatment for Schizophrenia?

Yes, there is effective treatment. With the right medication, psychiatric guidance, and psychosocial support, many individuals with schizophrenia can lead a near-normal life. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment are key to managing the condition.

What is Society’s Role?

Society plays a role as important as that of the psychiatrist. The foremost need is to reduce stigma. Schizophrenia is not the fault of the individual or their family. Communities must encourage families to seek treatment instead of hiding it. People affected by schizophrenia must be supported, included, and given the same compassion and opportunities as anyone else.

With proper treatment and societal support, individuals who might otherwise lose their way can be brought back to a meaningful life. A compassionate and informed society is one where everyone — regardless of their mental health condition — is given the chance to live with dignity and hope.

Let us remember: anyone can have this condition. The sooner we accept this, the stronger and more inclusive our society becomes.
