Hyperglycaemia

Why does blood sugar sometimes rise higher than expected? Hyperglycaemia, also spelled hyperglycemia, means that there is too much glucose in the bloodstream. It is commonly associated with diabetes, but several factors can cause blood sugar levels to rise temporarily or remain high over time. Understanding these causes can make diabetes management easier and help prevent complications.

What Causes Hyperglycaemia?

Is eating too much sugar the only reason blood sugar becomes high?

Not necessarily. Hyperglycaemia usually occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively. This is known as insulin resistance. However, several everyday and medical factors can contribute to high blood sugar.

Common causes include:

  • Eating more carbohydrates than the body can manage

  • Missing or taking an inadequate dose of diabetes medication

  • Not taking insulin as prescribed

  • Being less physically active than usual

  • Illness, infection or physical injury

  • Emotional or physical stress

  • Certain medicines, including corticosteroids

  • Hormonal conditions that affect insulin sensitivity

In people with diabetes, an imbalance between food, medication and physical activity can make blood sugar harder to control.

Can Stress Cause High Blood Sugar?

Can stress really affect glucose levels even if your diet has not changed?

Yes. During periods of physical or emotional stress, the body releases hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones can increase blood glucose and temporarily make it harder for insulin to keep sugar levels under control.

Illness, surgery and infections can also cause a temporary rise in blood sugar. For people with diabetes, these changes may require closer monitoring and medical guidance.

What Are the Symptoms of High Blood Sugar?

How can you tell that your blood sugar may be too high?

Mild or moderate hyperglycaemia may not always cause obvious symptoms. When symptoms occur, they can include:

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Increased hunger

  • Headache

  • Blurred vision

  • Tiredness or weakness

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Slow-healing cuts or sores

Some people may not notice symptoms until their blood sugar becomes considerably elevated. This is one reason regular monitoring is important for people living with diabetes.

Can High Blood Sugar Be Dangerous?

Is hyperglycaemia simply a temporary inconvenience?

Persistent high blood sugar should not be ignored. Over time, chronic hyperglycaemia can damage blood vessels and tissues and increase the risk of complications involving the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and other organs.

Very high blood sugar can also contribute to a serious emergency called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), particularly in people with type 1 diabetes. Warning signs can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, fruity-smelling breath, deep or laboured breathing and confusion. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.

How Is Hyperglycaemia Diagnosed?

What tests can show whether blood sugar is consistently high?

Healthcare professionals may use blood glucose testing, fasting blood sugar, an oral glucose tolerance test or an HbA1c test depending on the situation. People who already have diabetes may also monitor their glucose at home using a blood glucose meter or continuous glucose monitor.

How Can High Blood Sugar Be Managed?

Can lifestyle changes really make a difference?

Yes. Management generally involves a personalised combination of medication, appropriate food choices, physical activity and regular blood sugar monitoring.

Taking prescribed medicines consistently and discussing repeated high readings with a healthcare professional can help identify what is causing the problem and whether the treatment plan needs adjustment.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Frequent episodes of high blood sugar, unexplained symptoms or difficulty keeping glucose within your recommended range should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Early attention can help identify the underlying cause and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Understanding the signs of hyperglycaemia is important, especially for people living with Type 1 diabetes. Regular blood sugar monitoring, healthy habits, and proper medical guidance can help reduce the risk of complications.
